Haas

The Haas expander is a rapid palatal expander with palatal acrylic on each side of the vault and a 13.5 mm screw soldered to first molar bands.

Expansion

Haas

The acrylic and bands share the load, so the appliance exerts even, positive pressure on the palatal tissue and teeth. For a constricted arch, we use a 9 mm screw instead. Choose it for skeletal expansion in a growing patient, and see the Upper RPE when you'd rather keep acrylic off the palate.

Transverse maxillary deficiency in a growing patient
Unilateral or bilateral posterior crossbite
Cases where you want the palate to share the load
Arch space needed before fixed appliances
Consider another appliance when
The patient's midpalatal suture has matured See MARPE (4, 6 and 8 Eyelet)
You want slow expansion with no screw turns at home See Upper Quad Helix
You'd rather bond the expander than band it See DeLuke Contoured Expander

Still deciding which expander?

Suture maturity, tooth-borne or tissue-borne, banded or bonded, and whether the patient's parents can manage screw turns. Those narrow the choice quickly.
