Class II Correctors.

Functional and fixed appliances that bring the mandible forward and correct Class II relationships. Fixed Herbst designs, removable Twin Blocks and MARA, all made to your Rx.

Functional appliances and fixed correctors.

Our Class II range covers removable functional appliances and fixed correctors. The Bionator and the Clark and McNamara Twin Blocks are removable, so they depend on the patient wearing them as prescribed. The Specialty M4® Herbst, Specialty Miniscope® Herbst, Hanks Telescoping Herbst, MARA and Xbow are fixed and ask little or nothing of the patient.

  • Fixed correctors anchored on bands, ROC crowns or crowns
  • Upper expansion can be built into any fixed corrector
  • Every fixed corrector available 3D printed
  • OnBRACE® anchorage on the Herbst designs and the MARA
Hanks Telescoping Herbst

What does Class II correction solve?

Class II correctors treat a retrusive mandible and a Class II molar relationship, skeletal or dental, mostly in growing patients and, with a Herbst, in some adults. Several designs also handle a second problem in the same appliance: a narrow maxilla, the vertical dimension, or a patient who won’t wear elastics.

  • Mandibular retrusion in a growing patient
  • Skeletal or dental Class II molar relationship
  • Narrow maxilla alongside a Class II bite
  • Patients who won’t wear Class II elastics

Which Class II corrector fits the case?

Compliance and growth remaining decide most Class II cases. Anchorage and patient comfort decide the rest.

FAQ

Questions about Class II correction.

The Bionator is a single acrylic appliance whose flanges rest on the upper and lower lingual tissue to hold the mandible forward. A Twin Block is separate upper and lower appliances that meet on bite blocks, and the McNamara version adds acrylic to the lower labial bow for retention. All three can be designed to open, maintain or close the bite.

We recommend the Specialty M4® Herbst over the Hanks Telescoping Herbst, which has its screws built into a bulkier mechanism. The Specialty Miniscope® Herbst suits standard advancement with traditional screws and pivots, and the M4 adds more opening and lateral range.

The patient’s maximum incisal opening (MIO), which we use to size the telescope. A telescope that’s the wrong size can let the patient pull off the lower crowns at full opening. Measure from the upper to the lower incisal edges at a comfortable, pain-free opening, then add the overbite.

On a Herbst or MARA, Class II and Class II Division II patients usually go to an end-to-end advancement, if that’s less than 8 mm. Class II Division I patients go to Class I molars. Your prescribed advancement always overrules our standard.

Yes. A 12 mm RPE screw usually gives enough expansion to balance the lateral dimensions while the Herbst is worn, and a mini-expander or click screw is also available. If the patient is in posterior crossbite, AppleCore® screws let you insert the complete appliance without expanding the upper member first.

Yes. We add brackets or archwire tubes to the Herbst or the MARA, so partial or full fixed appliances run at the same time. Archwire tubes also let you tie the upper arch together to limit the headgear effect and level the lower arch.
